Should You Purchase a New or Used Frac Tank?

When it comes to purchasing a frac tank, you have the option of buying new or buying used. Just like with purchasing a car or other piece of equipment, there are pros and cons to both new and used. To determine the best solution for your project, it’s important to know the details of your project and how you intend to use your tank.

Pros and Cons of New Frac Tanks

A new frac tank is exactly what you would expect, recently manufactured with nothing previously-stored inside. This is beneficial for a project where you need complete peace of mind that your tank is free from any lingering contaminants. This may suit you if you are looking to store potable drinking water. Note though that a used tank where either the provenance is known, the tank has been previously used for potable water or a new potable safe liner has been installed are all options as well.

Pros and Cons of Used Frac Tanks

Used frac tanks offer a more cost-effective option. A used frac tank is perfect for storing materials such as fuel, fertilizer, manure, wastewater, and other liquids where it does not matter what was previously stored in the tank. Although used tanks are cleaned in between each application, it’s not safe to store potable water in them unless they were previously used for potable water or have been re-lined.

Used frac tanks may be more cost-effective, but the current inventory available nationwide is beginning to age. You may find that the good quality tanks are getting older and may need some maintenance to retain their quality for longer projects. Depending on what you’re storing inside your frac tank, this may not be an issue.

Refurbished Options

Since new tanks are hard to come by to begin with, a custom new tank with unique features is almost impossible to find. Luckily, many companies are turning to refurbished tanks as an option. A refurbished tank may have a new lining on the inside, a second internal wall added for containment purposes, a weir installed for separating solids and sediments, or even just a fresh coat of paint and any holes patched. When a new tank is out of your budget and a specific used tank is hard to find, refurbished tanks are the solution for you.
